Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA News) - The death toll of the Abepura incident has risen to five with the demise on Wednesday of First Brigadier Suhan Eko Pranoto (28), one of the policemen who was seriously injured in last Thursday`s clash between security troops and anti-Freeport demonstrators.
Eko died in hospital where he had been lying in a coma for the past one week.
Eko`s body is to be flown to Surabaya, East Java, for further transportation to his home-town in Ngawi district for burial.
Previously, three members of the Police Mobile Brigade and one Air Force member were killed in the riot following a demonstration to demand the closure of US giant mining company PT Freeport Indonesia`s operations in Papua. .
The three were First Brigadier Daud Sulaeman, First Brigadier Arizona and Brigadier Syamsudin.
Meanwhile, the situation in Jayapura remained conducive despite rumors saying there will be another massive rally outside the provincial legislative assembly.
Police have posted guards at the building, including at its entrance and set up barbed wire barricades at certain points in front of the building.
In Jakarta, National Police Headquarters deputy spokesman Brig. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam confirmed on Wednesday that a number of policemen were still being treated at the Abepura Hospital for r injuries incurred in the incident.
"Many of our men are still being treated at the hospital. But I do not know exactly the number," he said. (*)
